North Down Line Signalling Upgrade – Level crossing work starting 21 September

Message from Harry Riley, Public Affairs Manager, Southern Wessex:

I am writing to let you know that Network Rail will be continuing a major resignalling project to improve the railway on the North Downs line, between Shalford and Gomshall stations.

Over the next year, our teams will be upgrading 4 level crossings on the North Down Line, which includes Chilworth, Tangley, Brook and Burrows Lane level crossing. All four level crossings will have new signalling installed which will be controlled by Guildford Area Signalling Centre.

We will also be upgrading 16 signals along this stretch of railway. Newer equipment means faults are less likely to occur, providing more reliable services for passengers.

Work at Burrows level crossing (Queen Street, Gomshall, Guildford GU5 9LR) and Brooks level crossing (New Rd, Albury, Guildford GU5 9DJ) will take place at the following dates:

Date and time Type of disruption 01:20 Saturday 21 September to 04:30 Monday 23 September Full road closure 22:00 Saturday 21 September to 06:30 Sunday 22 September Half road closure outside of above times between 23:00 Friday 20 September to 06:30 Monday 23 September 01:20 Saturday 28 September to 04:30 Monday 30 September Full road closure Saturday and Sunday nights between 22:00 and 06:30 Half road closure during the days 00:50 Sunday 1 December to 04:30 Monday 2 December Full road closure Sunday night 22:00 to 06:00 Monday morning Half road closure Saturday night and Sunday during the day 23:00 Tuesday 24 December to 05:00 Friday 27 December Full road closures Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night 21:00 to 07:00 Half road closure during day Wednesday and Thursday. 00:05 Saturday 11 January to 04:00 Monday 13 January Full road closure 23:00 Friday 10 January to 06:30 Monday 13 January

Work at Tangley level crossing (A248, Chilworth, Guildford GU4 8NE) will take place at the following dates:

Brook and Burrows Lane level crossings are being replaced by state-of-the-art level crossing technology to make them safer for both trains and road users. The crossings will be fitted with radars that will scan the crossing before a train approaches, only lowering the barriers once all vehicles are clear. Meanwhile Chilworth and Tangley level crossings will be fitted with CCTV systems and be monitored by a signaller, who will observe the crossings, lowering the barriers when safe to do so.

Work will start in September where we will begin the main construction phase, working mostly at night on weekends, and during a line closure in February to carry out the work. After the February work, we will need further weekends to fully install the crossings, which will be operational in October 2025.

Letters will be sent to our lineside neighbours with details of the specific work sites before the start date . We have set up a dedicated webpage at https://www.networkrail.co.uk/NorthDownsLine which will be regularly updated as the work progresses.

If you have any questions about this scheme or require assistance in the future, please do not hesitate to get in contact.

Kind regards,
