Update : North Downs Line Signalling Upgrade
20 February 2025

Network Rail have sent this update on their ongoing work to upgrade signalling and level crossings on the North Downs Line between Shalford and Gomshall stations.
As you will know, the teams will be upgrading four level crossings on the North Downs Line, which includes Chilworth, Tangley, Brook and Burrows Lane level crossings. All four level crossings will have new signalling installed which will be controlled by the Guildford Area Signalling Centre.
Network Rail recently completed a 16-day closure that saw engineers complete critical upgrades between Guildford and Gatwick Airport. Following this, the teams need to complete some additional remedial works at Chilworth and Burrows level crossings.
Burrows Lane Level Crossing
Location: Queen St, Gomshall, Guildford GU5 9LR
Burrows Lane level crossing will be closed from 23:00 Saturday 22 February to 04:00 Monday 24 February, with a mini-bus on standby from Sunday 7am to 7pm. Teams will be installing bespoke ballast boards at the crossing, which are needed due to the large amount of soil the new boards will be retaining.
Chilworth Level Crossing
Location: Sampleoak Lane, Chilworth, Guildford GU4 8QN
In the Chilworth station area, Network Rail will be removing spoil and any other excess material from the area, linked to the recent River Wey works.
